Global Implications of the BRICS Summit and Canada-India Relations
Welcome back to a new season of Policy Roundtable (PRT) podcasts! With the expansion of Pubpoli Journal, PRT has also received a refreshed look but will retain the same format of policy discussions as before. This episode contains a brief introduction of the podcast from publisher Sean Wu, who will provide an overview of the podcast format.
In the main segment, Maha Siddiqui sits down with Yves Tiberghien, Professor of Political Science and founder of the MPPGA program, for a discussion around the recent BRICS summit in Russia. They focus on the political priorities of the original BRICS member states, the addition of new member states, as well as the definition and significance of the Global East. Additionally, they also highlight the current diplomatic crisis between Canada and India by exploring the history of Canada’s diplomatic relations with India.
Maha Siddiqui is a second-year MPPGA student specialiing in Global Governance and Security. She has been doing reseach as a graduate academic assistant on the intersection of nuclear energy and geopolitics with a focus on Small Modular Reactors. She is an IAR fellow associated with the Centre for India and South Asia Reseach. Maha is a TV journalist with two decades of experience. She is currently a consultant with one of India’s oldest private news networks NDTV.
Yves Tiberghien is a Professor of Political Science, Director Emeritus of the Institute of Asian Research (IAR), Faculty Associate with the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs and Co-Director of the Center for Japanese Research (CJR). He is also the Konwakai Chair in Japanese Research at the IAR. Yves is also Distinguished Fellow at the Asia-Pacific Foundation of Canada and at the University of Alberta’s China Institute. He serves as the International Steering Committee Member representing Canada at Pacific Trade and Development Conference (PAFTAD). In November 2017, he was made a Chevalier de l’ordre national du mérite by the French President. In 2014-2016, Yves served as Co-Director of the UBC Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs (MPPGA), which he founded as Chair of the UBC Public Policy Curriculum Committee in 2014.
